The Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History (VGMJH) is a national budgetary institution that collects, preserves, researches, restores and exhibits the historical, material and spiritual heritage of Lithuanian Jews, works of traditional and contemporary Jewish art, as well as documents and objects related to the Holocaust.
As an institution dedicated to preserving Jewish culture and traditions in Lithuania, the Museum has a long history. The first such museum was established in Vilnius in 1913 by the Society of Jewish Antiquities Enthusiasts.
The founder of the present-day Museum is the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. The Museum was re-established by Resolution No. 177p of the Lithuanian Council of Ministers on 6 September 1989. On 13 February 1991, by Resolution No. 56p of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, most of the exhibits were returned to the re-established Lithuanian State Jewish Museum. In the same year, the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas donated the surviving exhibits of the Kaunas Jewish History and Ethnography Society. These objects formed the basis of the Museum’s collections.
In 1997, marking the 200th anniversary of the death of the Vilna Gaon, the Museum was named in his honour.
