During this session we will explore the life of Holocaust survivor and painter Samuel Bak, who spent his childhood in Vilnius. As a group activity, the children will use excerpts from his memoir “Painted in Words” to match his description to right painting, before exploring the hidden meanings behind the various symbols within the paintings that provide further historical, political, and emotional context. This 60-minute workshop will reveal the power of imagery, by looking at how Samuel Bak was able to communicate the lasting effects of his experiences as a Jewish boy growing up in the Second World War in Vilnius – experiences that may otherwise be indescribable with words alone.
