On July 12, a premiere screening of the documentary film “The Good Nazi” and a discussion with the executive producer of the film and the archaeologists behind the story were held in the museum’s Tolerance Center. The event was organized in cooperation with the US Embassy in Vilnius.
“The Good Nazi” is a tribute to the amazing story of Major Karl Plagge, who from 1943-1944 ran the forced labor camp HKP 562, an army transportation vehicle shop which was located on Subačiaus Street in Vilnius. Due to the efforts of Major Plagge, about 250 people were saved.
Prior to the screening, greeting words were said by the Deputy Director of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum Dr. Kamilė Rupeikaitė, Chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Vilnius Howard Solomon, Ambassador of the State of Israel Amir Maimon and film’s executive producer Simcha Jacobovici.
“The film is made skillfully, it is powerful in its sensitivity, it captures from the very beginning and holds till the very end. Video testimonies from survivors who were imprisoned in the HKP are entwined into the narrative of the film and contribute to its enormous intensity. Still, another powerful element, linking all the testimonies together, is the story of Major Plagge himself, of the „Good Nazi“, dr. Rupeikaitė said in her greeting address.
After the screening of the film, a discussion moderated by Museum‘s communication coordinator Živilė A. Juonytė was held. The participants included film‘s executive producer Simcha Jacobovici, archeologists Dr. Richard Freund, Dr. Jon Seligman, Ramūnas Šmigelskas and geo-archeologist and cartographer Dr. Philip Reeder, who shared their insights from the movie and answered questions from the audience.
