The painting depicts the face of one of billions of sufferers, innocent victims of torture, survivors of the Holocaust or defenceless people who are perishing in various parts of the world. The victims of the Holocaust disappear in the mist of oblivion: the head appearing out of the grey mist is looking at us, but will soon disappear again into nothingness and into its silent pain. This is human anguish, a symbol of all innocent victims of torture and suffering who have been deprived of a voice to be able to defend themselves.
