Jacques Lipchitz Museum

The Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History is delighted to announce the opening of its new branch in Druskininkai — the Jacques Lipschitz Museum. Opening on Friday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m., the museum invites visitors from Lithuania and around the world to discover an inspiring new cultural destination.

Dedicated to the internationally acclaimed Litvak sculptor Jacques Lipschitz (1891–1973), the museum celebrates an artist who helped shape the language of modern sculpture. Born in Druskininkai, Lipschitz rose to prominence as a pioneer of Cubism, leaving a lasting imprint on 20th-century art. The exhibition traces his remarkable journey: from a small resort town to the artistic centres of Vilnius, Paris, and New York, while also introducing visitors to the rich history of the Jewish community in Druskininkai.

Blending art, history, and contemporary technology, the museum offers an interactive and immersive visitor experience. Designed to be open and accessible, it welcomes diverse audiences, from curious travellers to dedicated art enthusiasts, as well as visitors with special needs. Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum will host temporary exhibitions and a vibrant programme of educational activities for all ages.

From April 17 to 19, the opening will be marked by a festive programme of events. Admission will be free throughout these days. On April 18–19 (Saturday–Sunday), visitors can enjoy free educational activities for children and adults, as well as special curator-led tours offering deeper insight into the exhibition’s concept, the museum’s spaces, and the Jewish heritage of Druskininkai.

The Jacques Lipschitz Museum aspires to become a lasting centre for cultural heritage and a key point on the cultural map of the region, contributing to sustainable tourism and the vibrant life of Druskininkai. Its opening is a significant milestone for the city. The birthplace of an artist of international stature, whose importance is often compared to that of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. In 2026, as we mark the 135th anniversary of Lipschitz’s birth, this occasion takes on special meaning. As the artist himself wrote, “without our roots, we could not create the great trees of life” (from a letter to Vladas Vildžiūnas, 1972).
