In October and November, we invite you to "Art and Music", a series of talks and lectures bringing together art, music, history, and conversation. On October 14, the evening will explore the work and legacy of Jacques Lipchitz and his special place in the collection of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, while opening onto a broader discussion of curatorial practice in an encyclopedic museum.
Our special guest will be Dr. Adina Kamien, Senior Curator and Head of the Department of Modern Art at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Dr. Kamien will present the Museum’s important collection of works by Jacques Lipchitz, exploring his artistic legacy and contribution to twentieth-century sculpture.
The discussion will extend beyond Lipchitz’s own work to his activity as a collector. His wide-ranging collection, encompassing objects from different cultures and traditions, reflects the curiosity and openness that characterized his artistic world. Part of this collection is presented at the Israel Museum as a kind of cabinet of curiosities, revealing the diverse sources and visual cultures with which the artist surrounded himself.
Lipchitz’s collecting provides a point of departure for a broader conversation about Dr. Kamien’s curatorial practice at the Israel Museum. Drawing on the possibilities of an encyclopedic collection, she creates exhibitions that bring modern and contemporary art into dialogue with objects from different periods, cultures, religions, and disciplines. Exhibitions such as Bodyscapes and Lucid Dreams have explored fundamental human experiences across cultures and historical periods, while her upcoming exhibition on creation will examine cosmogony and the different ways cultures have imagined the origins and ordering of the world.
The conversation will consider how unexpected encounters between objects can generate new meanings and offer fresh perspectives on shared human questions.
The discussion will be held in English.
The evening will be accompanied by Spanish music performed on classical guitar by Sergejus Krinicinas, a Lithuanian classical guitarist and teacher, prizewinner of Lithuanian competitions and festivals who has performed with orchestras in Lithuania and abroad.
We invite you to an evening bringing together sculpture, collecting, curatorial practice, and music.
