On 28 July, the Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews hosted a special event with archaeologist Dr. Jon Seligman, the initiator and director of the archaeological excavations of the Great Synagogue of Vilna and the surrounding shulhoyf.
The event began with a lecture and guided tour by Dr. Seligman focusing on the archaeological finds preserved in our museum’s collection and displayed in the exhibition “Unearthing the Great Synagogue of Vilna”. Particular attention was given to the memorial plaque, its inscriptions and their significance. Afterwards, participants joined the archaeologist at the excavation site of the Great Synagogue of Vilna, where they learned about the ongoing research and the latest discoveries.
We are delighted that the event attracted so much interest and brought together a large audience eager to learn more about the Jewish history of Vilnius. At the beginning of the event, the audience was welcomed by Sergey Kanovich, Director of the Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History.
