Senda Berenson-Abbott
Senda Abbott (tikr. Berenson, 1868 m. Butrimonyse – 1954 m.
Senda Berenson Abbott (1868 in Butrimonys - 1954 in Santa Barbara, USA) was the first women's basketball promoter in the USA, and the author of the first women's basketball textbook.
Abbott was also a pioneer of women's team sports - until then, team sports were considered too rough and male-oriented, and girls did not participate in team games. She is considered the mother of women's basketball worldwide: the rules she proposed for women's basketball were adopted in 1899 and remained in force, with only a few minor amendments, until the 1970s. The first women's game at Smith College in Boston took place in 1893 in a packed house (men were not allowed to watch the game due to their clothing being too revealing), and she was a professor of physical education at Smith College for 19 years.
