The exhibition „Engravings by Cécile Reims“

The exhibition „Engravings  by Cécile Reims“ (Gravures de Cécile Reims) of the graphic art works by Cécile Reims was opened on the 11th of June, 2013, in the Tolerance Center of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum. Engravings were brought from the collections of the Judaism Art and History Museum in Paris (Musée d‘art et d‘histoire du Judaïsme, MAHJ)  and from L‘Hospice Saint-Roch Museum in Issoudun (Musée de l’Hospice Saint-Roch d’Issoudun, France).

Moment from the opening of the exhibition

Litvak artist Cécile Reims (born in1927) grew up in Kybartai and currently is living in France. In January, 2013, she was presented with the highest award in France – Knight of the Legion of Honour (Chevalier de l'ordre de la Légion). In 2011 graphic artist received Prix Maratier Award, founded by Pro-MAHJ foundation, established by Claire Maratier, the daughter of the painter Michel Kikoine. First Cécile Reims‘ teacher of the engraving technique was famous graphic artist Joseph Hecht (1181-1951). Her art works were strongly influenced by the Fred Deux (born in 1924), writer, artist and life companion of Cécile Reims. He engaged graphic artist to find inspiration in the transcendental themes. This lead to the birth of the famous Cecile Reims’ engravings series, based on „The Metamorphoses“ by Ovid or „The Songs of Maldoror“, written by Isidore-Lucien Ducasse (1846-1970), Count Lautréamont, praised by the Surrealists. Cécile Reims is the master of engravings: she interprets and reflects the creation of another artist on her copper plate, using dry-point or burin as a tool. The goal of this exhibition is to reflect many faces of exceptional artist, to gather all the different worlds and the artists, re-created in personal Cécile Reims manner, to show everyone Cécile Reims has ever been.

„I feel the pleasure in the graving process: I softly keep the burin in my right hand, pressing it down strongly and dryly. Burin is penetrating, cutting the copper plate, which I twist back and forth with my left hand, while I cut the line with the very end of the tool, cut the notch, as I wish it to be“ (Cécile Reims).

The integral part of the exhibition – the documentary by Director Mathieu Chatelier „See What the Shadow Becomes“(Voir ce que devient l‘ombre, 2010).
