Description of the exhibition

In 2009, the permanent exhibition “Rescued Lithuanian Jewish Child Tells about the Shoah” was opened at the Tolerance centre of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum in Vilnius. It has received critical acclaim in Lithuania and abroad, and in 2010 it received the prize of the Ministry of Culture of Lithuania.

The travelling exhibition as a version of the permanent one was prepared in 2015.

Content of mobile exhibition

The exhibition Rescued Lithuanian Jewish Child Tells about Shoah is comprised of the memoirs of Holocaust witnesses. Just before the war the participants of our exhibition were children and lived with their parents in different cities and towns of Lithuania. Currently they live in different parts of the world, the majority in Israel and Lithuania.

Surrounded by old photographs of their loved ones and their rescuers, they tell their stories. Unique and authentic material of this exhibition speaks about the Holocaust which took place in Lithuania during World War II. Holocaust survivors speak about the loss of their loved ones and miraculous salvation, and about the feelings, stress and fear of persecuted children that accompanied them throughout the entire war.

This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Lithuanian Jewish children killed during the Holocaust.

We also wanted to pay homage to the rescuers of Jews – Lithuanian citizens, who showed an exceptional heroism by saving Jews from Nazi genocide during the World War II.

Authentic rescued children‘s stories, the Righteous Among the Nations Ona Šimaitė‘s words: „even the smallest one can do a great job“ will remind us that even in the darkest historical times one has a possibility to make one‘s choice.
